Thriving together

When you join AtkinsRéalis in the UK and Europe, we’ll support you and your priorities, making sure you’re valued for your participation. While we’re passionate about what we do, we try not to take ourselves too seriously. We have fun, look out for each other – staying well and healthy on our journey together.
It's time to change

In 2017 we signed the Time to Change Pledge, developing an action plan to get our employees talking about mental health. It’s our aim to treat mental health like physical health, creating a culture where any one of us can speak up about how we’re feeling. Our programme has evolved and we’re currently working on updating our pledge.

Our wellbeing strategy

Creating a healthy workplace is one of our top priorities as part of our people plan for the region. Our Health and Wellbeing Steering Group exists with a high level of support from each business. We meet quarterly to review what is working for our employees and what we can do better. Our newly updated Mental Health Policy provides guidance that gets everyone involved in improving mental wellbeing at work.

After looking at the survey results from Britain’s Healthiest Workplace 2018, we will:

  • Continue to raise awareness for and support mental health
  • Support financial wellbeing, which leads to positive mental health
  • Further promote physical activities
  • Focus on nutrition and fatigue in ‘Life & Social’

Flexible working

As an employer of choice, we recognize that you exist outside of the office and that everyone has different interests and commitments. When you can excel in your personal life, you’ll bring that drive and passion to work. That’s why flexible working is a vital part of our collective success. You’ll be trusted to achieve your best at work, while structuring your time around what matters to you.

24/7 Counselling

In October 2018, we launched our new Employee Assistance Programme, now provided by ComPsych across AtkinsRéalis. This free, confidential service allows you to access guidance and support when you need it. It’s available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by phone or online. It helps prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones and enables you to control the negative effects of challenging situations.

Inclusive workspaces

Across the UK and Europe, we’re enhancing our current and new locations by making them more inclusive. In the UK we’re introducing welfare rooms equipped with sofas and washing facilities for hands and feet. These nourishing spaces can be used for breastfeeding, prayer, meditation and contemplation. In Sweden, employees can retreat to special rooms made for quiet times and relaxing.

Mental health first aiders

In 2017 our UK offices piloted the Mental Health First Aider programme with 40 volunteers. The business followed this up by investing in volunteer training. The UK now has a community of over 120 Mental Health First Aiders, made up of people from all our underrepresented groups, with a 50/50 gender split. They’re trained to spot mental health issues, offer non-judgmental help, and guide colleagues towards support.

Encouragement on the ground

Our people are committed to doing more than just talking about mental health issues. By actively supporting one another, we’re making AtkinsRéalis a place where no one has to go at it alone. Employees have self started many different support groups. These include, Financial Wellbeing, BAME, Diversity & Inclusion, LGBT+, ENABLE (our disability network), Menopause in the Workplace, Mindfulness, and Women’s Development. Our co-support is meaningful – in 2018 ParentNet held webinars to help families promote positive mental wellbeing in children.

Training when it’s needed most

When the pressure is on at work, resilience training is available for project teams. We also have specific MyCareer training that gives all our managers the tools and knowledge to support their teams’ mental health and wellbeing.

Looking after your physical health and wellbeing is something we see as an important part of what we offer. Our vision is to make staying fit and healthy easy and enjoyable, at home or at work.

Our offices across the UK and Denmark have Sports and Social Clubs run by employee volunteers. We provide fitness funding to help you buy equipment, hire courts and pitches, or subsidize the rates of fitness classes. In 2018 we supported over 100 clubs.

Our UK Cycle to Work scheme gives you tax benefits which means savings of up to 42% on bikes and safety equipment.

GymFlex offers discounts on annual gym memberships at over 2,500 health clubs, gyms and leisure centres across the UK & Europe, with a variety of membership options.

Every year we pull together teams of seven to play alongside colleagues around the world. Each competitor gets a tracker that uploads analytics to the leader board. Whether it’s yoga or kitesurfing – it’s so much fun to see how far co-workers will go to reach their personal best. This fun, healthy competition gets everyone engaged and involved.

Each year it has become increasingly popular. We started with 266 employees in 2015 – and just three years on we had 1,687 employees taking part.
