Field Engineering Manager - Kitimat

This position is based out of our client site in British Columbia and reports to our Project Director.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite in Kitimat, British Columbia. Life in Kitimat for Newcomers - Kitimat Bound
This position offers fly-in fly-out (FIFO). Rotations are available of 21/7 and 10/4.

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the engineering organization for the Kitimat program of projects.
  • Oversee the preparation of all technical documentation required for the execution of the projects.
  • Make decisions and recommendations on highly technical and complex issues based on recommendations and input from staff members.
  • Ensure all engineering work follows SNC-Lavalin Mining & Metallurgy and Client processes and procedures.
  • Maintain a high level of technical quality on the project.
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, technical innovation, client focus, team building and continual improvement. Establish and maintain a climate favourable to applying ethical and professional practices in the execution of the project engineering work.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the project engineering schedule.
  • Ensure the engineering group sets defined deliverables at the start of a project.
  • Plan and control the work of the engineering group on a project by ensuring projects are sufficiently staffed per project schedules with personnel possessing the specific technical needs of projects.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry standards and technology related to the mining industry. 
  • Participate in establishing project labour budgets and control expenditures within those budgets.
  • Develop, monitor and improve department work processes and tools. Establish innovative approaches to improve engineering efficiencies in carrying out engineering activities. 
  • Review project discipline performances on projects and propose an action plan to realign the results in the event of unsatisfactory performance.
  • Monitor overall productivity and efficiency of the project engineering team, forecast trends, and anticipate potential problems and difficulties meeting milestones or budgets on projects.
  • Provide weekly, monthly and quarterly reports on project engineering progress.
  • Contribute to the project instruction manual (PIM) by ensuring all SNC-Lavalin Mining & Metallurgy processes and procedures are included in the PIM and revised, if necessary, to suit project requirements. 
  • Implement effective communications with all project stakeholders, holding project functional leads accountable to keep their project team members informed on significant issues affecting their engineering discipline.
  • Adhere, support and promote the Company Quality Management System, HSE requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the checking of documentation and interdisciplinary coordination is carried out per project procedures.
  • Manage the field engineering team on a project.
  • Ensure technical audits are carried out at regular intervals per the guidelines in SNC-Lavalin Mining & Metallurgy processes and procedures
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Client Engineering Manager to ensure direct, rapid and efficient communications on all technical aspects of the project.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with all discipline leads, discipline department heads, project management, project controls personnel and construction personnel.
  • Maintain a record of continuous improvement ideas that can be applied to future projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer status in any Canadian province, British Columbia is preferred.
  • 15 years of relevant experience, including experience in leadership and supervisory roles.
  • Experience in the design and/or operation of Alluminium Smelteres is preferred.
  • Must possess broad experience in executing multi-discipline engineering work on large / complex projects across the complete EPC/EPCM lifecycle, including field engineering experience.
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Mining and Metals businesses, be thoroughly familiar with typical business and contract models employed in the industry and hold a wide network of professional industry contacts.
  • Demonstrate the implementation of innovative approaches to engineering execution in past roles
