This position is responsible for providing technical and highway asset systems support to the District operations and maintenance team to ensure conformance of the designated section of the highway with required government policies/standards and contractual requirements.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the development and planning of the District program activities for maintaining the travelled road surfaces, signing, illumination and traffic guidance systems, and highway corridor in safe conditions according to the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NBDTI) standards and contractual requirements.
  • Ensure all District field records and reporting records are in compliance with project requirements and coordinate the data systems input.
  • Coordinate the operational response to identified Operational Performance Measures action items and ensure reporting in compliance with all OMR standards.
  • Coordinate the preparation and filing of all sub-contractor administration and inspection records to ensure compliance for submission for payment.
  • Analyze the performance and effectiveness of the road surfaces, signing, illumination and traffic guidance components of the facility.
  • Collect the documentation of incident data records for recoverable and non-recoverable highway incident damage.
  • Collect data for the Highway Asset Management System and perform routine condition inspections of highway assets and assist with specialized detailed inspections.
  • Coordinate the collection and reporting of asset condition inspection data to the Highway Services Engineer.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of the annual District winter maintenance plan, equipment allocation and staffing coordination.
  • Coordinate the implementation of new winter maintenance practices, including best salt management practices and analyze winter maintenance data and other current data systems.
  • Perform and record calibrations on winter equipments and other instruments as needed.
  • Prepare monthly winter maintenance activity reports.
  • Prepare estimates and innovative cost savings relative to the delivery of the District’s  operations and maintenance program activities.
  • Coordinate the collection and reporting of corridor control issues in compliance with the NBDTI standards and contractual requirements.
  • Serve as the field inspector and responsible for the quality control, quantities, and inspection tasks for rehabilitation projects.
  • Provide assistance in the development and implementation of various systems and processes, and deliver training to staff on operational maintenance procedures.
  • Liaise with various outside agencies such as NBDTI, RCMP, surrounding Regions, Municipalities, and Fire Departments, as needed.
  • Available to address emergency situations outside regular shift hours.
  • Perform audits on occasion.
  • Coordinate a variety of in-class and on-line training sessions.
  • Maintain Health and Safety documents on Policies, Rules and Practices.
  • Maintain MSDS Sheets and ensure up to date.
  • Conduct orientation and pre-job meeting sessions with maintenance Contractors and Suppliers.
  • Perform routine road patrol as required.
  • Act on behalf of the Area Manager in his/her absence.

What will you contribute?

  • Possess a Civil Engineering Technologist diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years related experience in the highway/rehabilitation industry.
  • Valid driver license.
  • Technically competent.
  • Experience with and knowledgeable on various software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office, , SharePoint) along with various hardware applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as contract negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrate solid decision-making, problem-solving, customer service skills.
  • Analytical with strong attention to detail, timeliness and organization.
  • Good documentation and organizational skills.
  • Must be capable of lifting heavy objects on occasion.
  • Demonstrate good working knowledge of workplace health and safety.
