Insights SNC-Lavalin graduates: Boosting skills, gaining experience

I’m Bartho Schoonbee, a graduate mechanical engineer on AtkinsRéalis ’s Graduate Engineering Development Program (GEDP) in Sub Saharan Africa. I have a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and am currently doing my BTech.

What was the GDEP selection process like?

It was very interesting, and enjoyable. After my initial interview with AtkinsRéalis , I was chosen as part of a diverse group of graduates to participate in Engineering Week. We completed different tasks including psychometric tests, planning and building, get to know yourself games, toolbox talks, and teamwork.

What was your biggest highlight on the program?

I completed a full shutdown at Sasol Secunda Refinery as a Valve Engineering Coordinator. Working there was challenging and exciting. It has been a great chance to develop my knowledge and capabilities through training and working on important projects.

What kind of skills did you learn on the GEDP?

I’ve had opportunities to learn technical skills and soft skills. As part of the program I rotated around the different departments within the business. I’ve worked in procurement, quality control, safety, construction, stores, commercial and human resources. It is a very inspiring program as it has made me feel that I could be part of the future of the organization.

What is the oil & gas team like at AtkinsRéalis ?

The people here really demonstrate the “One Team One Goal” slogan. My colleagues and leaders were dynamic, team players and I learned a lot from them. They helped me see my bigger career picture as I gradually progressed through the program.
