Insights A Day in the Life of a Graduate Management Consultant

Meet Laura Hobbs, Graduate Management Consultant on our Junior Consultant Development Programme (JCDP) in Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group. Based in Transformation and Delivery Consulting, she splits her time between two internal initiates as a Programme Manager and a Communications Coordinator.

I'm trusted on one of Atkins' most significant internal programmes.

The core mission driving Partnering with the Armed Forces (PwAF) is to support the veterans and reservists within the business and give back to the broader community. In my role, I work with several organisations, supporting and encouraging recruitment, CV mentoring and entrepreneurship advisory of veteran and reserve personnel. The programme is extremely important to Atkins and our values, requiring constant and continuous commitment.

"It's an honour to have a core role on such an initiative. I have a lot of responsibility and absolutely love being involved. I'm excited to continue to develop within this role and community!”

What I do every day as PwAF's Programme Manager

I help the PwAF Champion organise events throughout the year, liaising with internal and external stakeholders. I'm the main point of contact between Atkins and the external organisations and charities we collaborate with. Working internally, I connect with a wide range of senior stakeholders. It's been a great opportunity to develop my network outside of my graduate cohort. I now understand much more about different areas of the business and how they function.

I enjoy making a difference in our communities.

My work on the programme is incredibly rewarding, with very tangible results. The frequent award ceremonies, charity events, and recruitment fairs show that the work put into this initiative really makes a positive impact and achieves what it sets out to.

"I'm proud to be working for an organisation that holds the Gold Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. In Atkins, we're dedicated to supporting our veteran and reservist employees and the military communities."

I'm helping to increase wellbeing awareness.

Aa a member of the JCDP's Wellbeing team, I help create and share meaningful, impactful communications, primarily targeted at the Young Professional Community. I plan wellbeing-related themes, educative and supportive content, fundraising events and encouragement across our Consultant Development programmes.

"I'm owning and leading October with a spotlight on Seasonal Affective Disorder, November with Movember and February 2022 focusing on eating disorders."

Choosing where to make a difference

I sought out this particular internal role in addition to my two pre-allocated ones as I'm interested in promoting workplace health and wellbeing. As someone who has suffered from anxiety and other associated issues in the past, I'm really passionate about bringing issues to the surface and encouraging open conversation and support systems.

Through my work with the Wellbeing team, I hope to help provide support and resources to everyone who is struggling and offer material to help anyone be a supportive colleague.
