What do civil and structural engineers do?

Both civil and structural engineers are integral in the successful delivery of infrastructure projects. Civil engineers are responsible for designing, building, and managing infrastructure projects, including roads, railways and sports stadiums. The world is reliant upon civil engineers to deliver some of the most important infrastructure that enables connectivity and global transportation, making a tangible difference to people’s lives, such as the a 1.3km underground extension of the Tung Chung Line in Hong Kong.

Structural engineers are responsible for designing the strength, durability, and stability of a structure such as a bridge or building. What does the future of Hong Kong look like?

In Hong Kong, the construction sector is worth around £30 billion per year , and with many new infrastructure opportunities arising, an engineering career in Hong Kong is certainly an exciting prospect. Engineers from all around the world flock to Hong Kong because of the quality of life and the abundance of opportunities that are available. Wendy, for example, grew up in Canada, gained experience in New York, and ultimately relocated to be part of rapid growth in our Hong Kong office.

The construction industry in Hong Kong is forecast to record growth of 3.3% in real terms in 2021, owing to the global economic recovery and the government's investment in infrastructure projects to stimulate economic growth. We are also expecting to see an average annual growth rate of 2% in real terms between 2022 and 2025, therefore the opportunities rising in Hong Kong are exciting.

Structural and civil engineering in Hong Kong

With a growing and ageing population, engineers in Hong Kong are required to show innovation in order to help provide new and more efficient infrastructure systems that are necessary to accommodate more residents. As the city recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, we are going to see a focus on digital techniques combined with more innovation. The evolution of a concrete digital twin, for example, has helped speed up concrete casting in Hong Kong and overall, digital technology has been a source of relief for the sector.
