Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Atlanta, GA EcoSciences Group as a Senior Architectural Historian.


MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

The selected candidate for this position will apply their historic preservation knowledge and experience toward the assessment of project sites, under the direction of the History Manager. This position will support projects and manage tasks in the field and in the office, including: performing and leading historic resource surveys, assessing effects to historic resources, preparing and reviewing reports, and interacting with clients, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies. Projects primarily relate to transportation and infrastructure development for clients in the public sector.


JOB DUTIES
  • Lead and conduct historic resource field surveys.
  • Plan field work and serve as safety lead while in the field, including the preparation of safety documents and adherence to company safety protocols and procedures.
  • Conduct background research on historic resources using a variety of primary and secondary sources.
  • Evaluate historic resources for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places, in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and/or the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA).
  • Assess effects to historic resources, including working with design professionals and overall project team to avoid and minimize impacts in accordance with Section 106 and/or GEPA, and propose mitigation where necessary.
  • Performs work which involves conventional methods and requires the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning to achieve and meet project expectations.
  • Prepare technical reports and provide quality reviews of reports prepared by others, including creating project and resource maps.
  • Candidates must be willing and prepared to spend time in the field and travel to project sites with some overnight visits required.
  • Projects will generally be in Georgia but could also be located outside of the state, as needed.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • B.A./B.S. or M.S. in a field of Science to commensurate with hiring discipline.
  • This level may be achieved by Scientists with minimum five years experience since Bachelor's degree or four years experience with Master's degree; typical incumbent has six to seven years' experience.


SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Excellent written, technical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have business vision, excellent communication skills, and be able to represent the firm effectively to clients, key public officials, and the community in general.
  • General understanding of the following industries: infrastructure, transportation (GDOT), state and local governments, and/or regulatory/compliance.
  • Prior GDOT experience and prequalification training is highly desired.


PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • Professional certification/registration may be required, depending on discipline.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior's professional qualification standards and must qualify as a Historian or Architectural Historian on federal, state, and local cultural resource permits.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with National Historic Preservation Act regulations (including Section 106) and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements pertinent to cultural resources.
  • Candidates must have experience coordinating with SHPOs, THPOs, federal and state agency representatives, and land owners/managers regarding cultural resources.
  • Experience with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Georgia SHPO are preferred, but experience with DOT and SHPO offices in other states may be acceptable.
  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail, technical writing, computer and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with reading transportation engineering plans is a benefit but not required.
  • Experience with HABS/HAER/HALS.
  • Experience nominating resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • It is desirable that candidates have experience with NEPA studies including cultural resource components of Environmental Impact Statements and Environmental Assessments (EIS/EAs).
  • Routine travel for field work is a requirement of the position.
  • The candidate must be confident working in harsh and inhospitable outdoor climates in the southeast US during all times of the year.
  • The role requires a keen awareness of safety protocols in the field and in the office.
  • The candidate must have a valid driver’s license.
  • The role will require operating a company truck or rental vehicle for field work.
