Insights What can I do with my Electrical Engineering degree?
So you love all things electrical engineering? But have you considered the vast possibilities that lie ahead? You might be wondering, "What can I do with my Electrical Engineering degree?" or maybe you’ve already started your hunt for graduate electrical engineering jobs, and need a little guidance to choose the right path for you.
From sustainable energy solutions to complex infrastructure projects, your skills are in high demand across diverse industries. We’re here to help make that decision a little easier.
At Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, we offer talented graduates like you the opportunity to take control of your own path with our Graduate Development Programme (GDP).
With an electrical engineering degree, you could be eligible for our Electrical and EC&I Engineering Graduate Scheme.
But why should you consider a graduate scheme with Atkins? We're all about empowering our graduates to reach their full potential. You’ll receive support from all levels of colleagues, from line managers to senior leaders.
We’re a well-respected global brand in design, engineering and project management. What’s not to love about having one of the world's leading consultancies on your CV? It’s the perfect launchpad for successful electrical engineering careers.
But where exactly could you work? Here’s a little insight into our electrifying business areas:
Infrastructure
Have you explored our infrastructure business area? If you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical and electronic engineering, you could help us reimagine our places and spaces. Think transport hubs to university campuses, industrial facilities, and critical flood defence schemes.
You could help create a better future, like Divya who works on embedding sustainability into infrastructure design.
If you like the sound of innovative engineering solutions, practising technical and commercial leadership whilst engaging with clients and project management, you’ll love working with our Building Services team.
Or if you’re captivated by the intricate systems that support the supply and maintenance of water, one of our most valuable resources, then our Design and Advanced Technology team could be the place for you. You’ll get to develop your capability, from wastewater treatment to bioresource recovery.
Nuclear and Power
You’ll need a minimum of 2.2 Bachelors/BEng in a relevant subject to join our Nuclear and Clean Power business area as a graduate electrical engineer. You could work in one of our many locations across Bristol, Epsom, Glasgow, Leeds or Whitehaven, working in power generation, nuclear and energy storage sectors.
Working in nuclear and clean power, you’ll gain experience in delivering everything from feasibility studies, through to all the design cycles from functional to detailed design with exciting opportunities to work on client sites or work abroad.
You could contribute to national-scale projects like Hinkley Point C, helping to transform the UK’s future by providing low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes, and 7% of our electricity.
Like Laura, you’ll be trusted to manage your time with ample opportunities to grow in your role. It’s not just about work, we have a culture of care – we have fun, look out for each other, and stay happy and healthy on our journey together. We recognise your achievements with bonuses and flexible benefits such as optional extra holiday.
Transportation
Do you want to shape the future of transport? Or help to take the world to carbon zero by engineering a better future, like Alex?
Combining traditional engineering, new technologies and innovative thinking, you could help create safer, faster and easier journeys that support a healthier, happier and more productive society in our Transportation business area.
You could work in our Rail team, with the possibility of a fast track to chartership, if you have a minimum 2.2 Bachelors/BEng degree or 2.2 Masters/MEng in subjects including:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Power Engineering
- Astrophysics
- Physics
- Renewable Energy
- Theoretical Physics
In this team you could work hands-on with a programme of works valued at £2bn, developing as a well-rounded engineer or project manager.
In Rail, you’ll be a part of a team of experts in undertaking and developing layouts plans and details for electrifying new railway corridors. You’ll gain exposure to a varied pipeline of works such as High Speed 2 (HS2), linking eight of Britain’s biggest cities, and reducing journey times and increasing capacity on the network.
Unleash the full potential of your Electrical Engineering degree
If you're ready to make a meaningful impact in the world, whilst launching your career, explore our Electrical and EC&I Engineering Graduate Scheme. The journey begins now, and we can't wait to be a part of it!
Our training and development, and networking opportunities, and inclusive work environment ensure you'll thrive in a collaborative environment where your ideas are valued, and your growth is nurtured.
