Meet inspiring architects Emily and Panagiota

What is WICE?

Women in Construction & Engineering Awards seek to celebrate and create role models for women considering careers in our building and design sectors. They also aim to make these industries more enticing to female candidates while encouraging companies to employ and train more women.

Shaping the world from our Building Design practice

Emily and Panagiota are part of the Architecture team at Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, leading some of the world's most challenging projects, from education, commercial and residential, to defence, energy, and transportation. Made up of experts with diverse expertise and knowledge, it provides all the engineering and design services needed to create the infrastructure that keeps the world moving forward.

What excites you about what you do?

EMILY: Having moved a lot throughout my life and education, I thrive in new situations. I'm always happy to be challenged and take on new opportunities. As a child, I was creative and mathematical, so I became interested in architecture quite early on.

I'm committed to collaborating with other industry professions and disciplines to design beautiful, inspiring, and sustainable places to live. Creating beauty in the ever-changing built environment fascinates me. Transport excites me as it facilitates the constant activity and motion of our cities and people.

PANAGIOTA: I'm passionate about topical issues that influence market trends in various countries:

The 2013 financial recession of Cyprus, the development of skyrises on the Limassol coastline, how politics impacted the growth of deprived areas in Cyprus and their strategic regeneration that avoids gentrification, or the way Brexit is influencing the industry and architectural education in the UK. My most recent interest that I explore through my work with Atkins and interest an interest that was enforces further with the current pandemic, is concerning the Future of Workplace.

What are you working on at the moment?

EMILY: I'm the Lead Architect and Contractor Responsible Engineer on the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme for East Croydon Station. This high-profile project is part of Network Rail's Brighton Main Line Upgrade. It involves expanding and enhancing East Croydon station. This will include two additional platforms, a larger concourse with improved facilities for passengers, and better connections with the town centre's other transport links to support the ongoing regeneration of central Croydon.

I've also been fortunate enough to work on Sheffield Midland Station's Integrated Masterplan, where I acted as the Lead Architect. This project was very close to my heart as it allowed me to have a unique role in reimagining a part of my home city.

PANAGIOTA: I'm part of the team delivering the architectural design of Sky's new innovation centre. During the design phase I led the Immersion Room development. I've explored how digital technologies can communicate ideas and their value within a building that promotes innovations and collaboration.

It's been an excellent opportunity to learn from the project's construction and build on our holistic knowledge. For example, how it's essential to recognize that to generate innovative design solutions, a work environment needs to embrace the latest technologies and methodologies.

How does Atkins support you in areas that interest you?

EMILY: I find mentoring and teaching hugely rewarding and consider bridging the disconnect between architectural education and working-in-practice crucial to advancing the profession.

For the last four years, I've been able to work as an External Practitioner and Design Tutor for first-year architecture and engineering students at The University of Nottingham. I lecture at The University of East London through Atkins' Civil Engineering lecture programme. This has allowed me to develop my communication and creative-thinking skills and inspire under-represented people within the industry.

PANAGIOTA:
In my 18 months at Atkins, I've developed strong interest in the Future of the Workplace. I've been encouraged to explore this further through my work on the SNC-Lavalin Group's Lava Labs, rethinking our offices worldwide. I've enjoyed working closely with offices abroad to design and deliver multiple uses of our spaces.

I believe innovation is deeply rooted in the environments we work and live in. As such, I appreciate that my work at Atkins has allowed me to play a crucial role in projects that champion this mindset. Both the Lava Labs and the Sky Labs projects are great examples of inclusive, sustainable developments that promote health and well-being in the workplace while recognizing our differences.

I always aim to promote these ideas throughout my role as the Continuing Professional Development organizer for the London Practice. I facilitate lectures and training to enhance our competence as professionals in our fields, stimulate new agendas and influence our operations. Furthermore, as the Continuing Professional Development organizer for the London Practice, I always aim to promote these ideas and their applications.
