The opening presents the opportunity to join our Building Services team in Epsom who are playing a leading role in some of the world’s most challenging and exciting engineering projects across a plethora of sectors including Mission Critical, Aviation, Energy (eg Fission, Fusion, Large scale PV), Commercial Offices, Residential, Blue Light, Education, Transportation and Defence. Our work will have you working with designers all across the UK and internationally on projects that range from small net zero carbon housing developments to projects of significant and national scale.

The opportunity will require candidates to be client-facing as well as being involved in the day-to-day design of multi-disciplined projects. It is an exciting opportunity for an experienced building physics engineer to further develop their career within a leading multi-disciplined building design consultancy. As a multi-d team in one office the deep understanding of how a building works and performs will put you at the heart of soul of every project with the ability to drive forward low and net zero approaches an integrated manner where people will listen, learn and follow your advice.

The role will involve working on numerous projects, client communication, design development with the whole team and building physics reporting. The ideal candidate must have the ability to understand the bigger picture and how to push teams to solutions.The candidate will have a strong propensity to work with others and should be conscientious and committed.

Our focus is on developing our staff to realise their full potential, with development plans geared to individual needs and abilities.This role will allow development of existing technical skills as well as providing potential to expand digital skills and project management.

Our Practice is committed to developing our ways of working using emerging Digital Technology and your work will be supported by our Research and Innovation teams and local digital champions who are delivering Digital Transformation programmes at a local and international scale.Our ideal individual will bring strong technical skills to the role, as well as an enquiring mind able to contribute to the growth of our digital practice.

Responsibilities: 

  • To undertake engineering Building Physics design and modelling on a range of projects.
  • Producing dynamic thermal models using IES software and develop the understanding of a buildings performance and help develop and drive solutions to improve the design with the full Atkins design team in a truly collaborative manner.
  • Producing PART L & EPC reports,TM54,Thermal Comfort Reports, daylight analysis, LZC reports, BREEAM modelling reports, etc. 
  • Act as Project Leader on Building Physics Projects. 
  • Contribute towards raising & promoting the level of technical excellence in a national and local practice. 
  • To work with our digital teams on in house modelling tools development, testing and roll out of these across the business.
  • Our wider Building Physics team uses a plethora of design tools from a range of thermal and CFD packages and you would be encouraged to support work in these areas where you have experience (or develop your skills).
  • Help & assist with technical development of junior staff. 

Requirements: 

  • Knowledge of British and European Standards, Building Regulations documents etc. 
  • Have deep knowledge (or passion for developing this) of passive building design in terms of solutions and building form both from an environmental and energy efficiency perspective.
  • Proven experience within a similar role.
  • Experience in development of Energy strategies and Building Regulations Part L assessments.
  • Dynamic modelling experience for a range of subjects. 
  • Degree qualified – mechanical or building physics. 
  • Professional Membership (CIBSE, IET, IMechE) preferred. 
  • Low Carbon Energy Assessor is advantageous. 
  • Finding solutions and options for digital transformation and the industry net zero carbon challenge. 
  • Wider knowledge of other disciplines highly desirable. 
  • A technical and analytical mind with a desire to improve building performance and understanding.
