We are looking for Highways Engineer to join our design teams in Essex (Chelmsford or Cambridge) to work on a wide range of projects.

About the role:

As a Highway Engineer, you will have technical competence in highway engineering design. You will ensure the technical quality of the elements of work you are undertaking, embracing collaborative working, and helping to drive cashable efficiencies. We are seeking candidates with experience in the design of new highways as well as those who are experienced in the design of maintenance schemes on the trunk road and motorway network.

What you will be doing?

Designing a wide variety of highway projects at all stages of the project lifecycle from concept to in-use maintenance on the local and strategic highway network. Specifically, you will be:

  • Providing technical support and designing highway infrastructure projects from an up to date knowledge of highway engineering and the process and techniques involved in highway design and scheme development.
  • Supporting the project managers and senior engineers on technical aspects of designs from project initiation through to completion.
  • Ensuring robust technical solutions.
  • Undertaking checking and assisting with technical reviews of projects.
  • Supporting other team members and assisting with the technical development of staff.
  • Solving engineering problems.
  • Helping to prepare design resource estimates.
  • Helping to develop construction cost estimates.
  • Coordinating design with other specialists.
  • Using proprietary software for highways design, drainage and other elements as appropriate to deliver technically robust designs.

You’ll need to have:

  • BEng or Meng in Civil Engineering (or similar) and IEng status or equivalent capability.
  • Experience of designing highway engineering solutions to DMRB. Ready for construction.
  • Proven capability in highway engineering design for significant maintenance projects or new infrastructure projects (experience in highway drainage design would be an advantage).
  • The ability to work within a BIM2 environment using proprietary industry standard design software including Civils 3D.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to interface with Clients, specialists and senior staff and advise other team members on technical matters.
  • Willingness to help develop less experienced team members including planning, monitoring and controlling their work.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills working collaboratively with others.
  • Good technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills with ability to manage the work of others.
  • Ability to focus and deliver whilst working within programme and budget constraints.
  • A desire to help others and contribute to the capability of the business.
  • A full UK driving license is essential.

We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic individual with good existing client relationships. An eye for detail and confidence to challenge decisions and concepts in a constructive way are key attributes for this role. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with clients and stakeholders at all levels.

Training:

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents.  These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process.  We actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.

Additional Information:

The actual full-time working hours are to be agreed with the line manager in due course. Some flexibility may be required by the successful candidate in order to meet project and client needs. A part-time role may be considered.
