The successful candidate will be part of our national Planning and Environment team which works directly with Atkins SNCLavalin’s multi-disciplinary teams and businesses in a number of offices throughout the UK, and across the world, on a variety of major infrastructure and development projects. Our team is one of the UK’s leading Planning consultancies, at the forefront of thought-leadership in planning and delivery of infrastructure and development and the use of digital data to support our work.  We have lots of interesting projects working for a range of clients including Highways England, Homes England, Environment Agency, Transport for the North, local authorities, Network Rail, EDF, utility companies, including Yorkshire Water, and private developers.

We require an experienced Planner to join our successful and expanding Planning team in the north, working to deliver our Planning services for our clients from Atkins offices in Leeds, Sheffield, Warrington and Manchester.

The candidate appointed will join a progressive national Planning team with a wide range of client interests in the public and private sectors.  The successful candidate will work within a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment with colleagues in environmental, engineering and design disciplines across the wider Atkins UK and international teams.  We are looking for people with a real passion for Planning and the skills to deliver transformative and high-quality infrastructure and communities.

The position requires an experienced chartered Town Planner (or working towards chartership) combining an excellent track record in planning, preferably with experience in our growing markets in the housing, energy, water, transportation and development sectors.  The role will require the successful candidate to provide support on a range development and infrastructure schemes through the planning consenting process.  A key part of the role will also be to work collaboratively with other environmental disciplines within the wider Atkins UK teams to provide comprehensive, high quality advice to public and private sector clients across a range of challenging development projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of applications for a range of planning applications, also providing support on Development Consent Orders or Transport Works Act Orders applications.
  • Undertake site appraisals, policy reviews and evidence based research.
  • Drafting high quality supporting reports.
  • Negotiation of planning submissions successfully through the consenting process.
  • Provide high-quality planning advice to external and internal clients on planning consenting process for a range of development and infrastructure projects.
  • Manage project inputs from other technical disciplines within Atkins and external consultants.
  • Develop client network and collaborate with colleagues across Atkins to win work including through formal tenders and bids.  

Requirements:

  • A degree or post graduate qualification in Town and Country Planning (RTPI accredited).
  • Membership of RTPI (or working towards chartership).
  • Working in consultancy, a local authority planning team or similar relevant experience is required.
  • Sound knowledge of planning law and procedures, including the changing planning system at national, regional and local levels.
  • Excellent communications skills, including report writing skills.
  • Working knowledge or experience of the UK’s infrastructure and development consenting processes.
  • Proven experience of building successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The Individual:

  • The individual must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, determined and resilient.
  • Knowledge and experience of planning and development issues in the north is preferable.
  • Be able to work under pressure, with excellent time management skills and proven success in meeting tight deadlines.
  • Work well as part of multi-disciplinary teams with the confidence to input effectively as an individual across a range of projects.
  • Prepare accurate reports to a high standard.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss town planning issues.
  • Flexibly apply knowledge and experience to a variety of planning-related tasks.
  • Adaptable and prepared to take on new challenges including work from other Atkins or client office locations.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
