AtkinsRéalis’ Building Services Design Practice are looking for an experienced, motivated Public Health Engineer seeking to develop their career in a positive, stimulating and supported environment and join our team where talent is encouraged and growth opportunities unrivalled. We have an opening in one of our UK offices (Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Warrington, Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Birmingham, Bristol) each of which offers a fantastic collaborative environment.

The opening presents the opportunity to join our Building Services team who are playing a leading role in some of the world’s most challenging and exciting engineering projects across a plethora of sectors including Mission Critical, Aviation, Energy (eg Fission, Fusion, Large scale PV), Commercial Offices, Residential, Blue Light, Education, Transportation and Defence. Our work will have you working with designers all across the UK and internationally on projects that range from small net zero carbon housing developments to projects of significant and national scale.

The opportunity will require candidates to be client-facing as well as being involved in the day-to-day design and management of projects. It is an exciting opportunity for an experienced design engineer to further develop their career within a leading building design consultancy.

The role as well as leading and delivering Public Health Engineering projects is to lead and develop the regional Public Health engineering capability and develop an integrated capability across the regions.  The business currently capability is Epsom and London centric.

Our focus is on developing our staff to realise their full potential, with development plans geared to individual needs and abilities. This role will allow development of existing technical skills as well as providing potential to expand digital skills and project management.

Our ideal individual will bring strong technical skills to the role, as well as an enquiring mind able to contribute to the growth of our digital practice, and the potential to lead and manage large and diverse delivery teams, locally and remotely.

People:

  • Generates good working relationships with internal and external clients and develops a client relationship management strategy.
  • Provides management, motivation, inspiration and supervision for the Public Health team engaged on projects.
  • Undertakes appraisals and personal development plans for selected team members.
  • Good team leader skills in order to grow the business and develop team culture.
  • Can identify and nurture talent in others to build a high performing and technically sound team.

Technical knowledge of the following systems:

  • Assumes full technical responsibility and operational accountability for teams output on projects.
  • Comfortable in communicating and challenging other design team members to arrive at the optimum Building Services design solution.
  • Has an engineering design background and able to fully demonstrate an ability to design and lead Public Health Discipline, a Building Services teams and/or Multi-Discipline teams.
  • Extensive Public Health design experience in the construction industry.
  • Able to demonstrate a full understanding of the key Building Services design considerations when working on projects and familiar with relevant industry standards and guidelines.
  • To be fully conversant in all Public Health systems.
  • Above (and below) ground drainage.
  • Hot & cold-water systems, inc. wash down points in plantrooms & cleaners’ cupboards.
  • Drain venting.
  • Rainwater pipe work to ground level.
  • Blue roofs.
  • Grey and Black water system.
  • Gas supplies to the buildings.
  • Water storage.
  • Sprinklers.
  • Operational testing/witnessing of the above systems.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties as required by the management team from time to time, in order to maintain flexibility in the organisation.

Requirements:

  • Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering or related subjects.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with CIBSE or IMechE.
  • Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools including Revit, NBS and Microsoft packages.
  • Familiar with energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings and understanding of energy and hot water design implications.
  • Awareness of the principles LETI targets and an understanding of operational and embodied carbon in relation to public health engineering.
  • Experienced in designing for measurement and verification, including experience of commissioning and post installation evaluation of performance.
  • Experience of working in a design consultancy and/or experience of working within a contractor design environment is essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of appropriate technical standards.
  • Able to take charge of project deliverables, make decisions, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.
  • Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients is essential.
  • Comfortable working within time and cost budgets as agreed at project briefing meetings.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties as required by the management team from time to time, in order to maintain flexibility in the organisation.
