Join our Nuclear & Power Division, as a Principal Civil or Structural Engineer and play a pivotal role, creating spaces and places that matter. We've been in the sector for over 50 years and delivered over 7 million work-hours, which makes us the most prominent nuclear new-build organisation in the UK. In this highly technical role, you'll lead from end-to-end on a broad range of projects, with plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself and support the development of your peers.

Our Team:

Our Atkins Reactor Decommissioning team is part of SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear & Power business. Our multi-disciplinary team is made up of Programme & Project Managers, engineers, and scientists who work across engineering, decommissioning and waste management projects. We specialise in taking on the most challenging engineering projects in the nuclear decommissioning sector, covering markets in the UK, Europe and North America.

Our clients are mostly tier 1 site licence companies, utilities and government organisations with aging and non-operational nuclear reactor fleets.

Our projects include design and assessment of ILW and LLW retrieval and processing techniques and facilities, packaging of waste for transportation and long-term storage, assessment of existing plant and support to strategy, planning and infrastructure required for decommissioning, deplant, demolition and site remediation.

The Role:

You’ll be helping us to develop clients decommissioning strategies, and more specifically, their deconstruction and demolition plans. This could include the strategies and techniques to assure the longevity and integrity of existing infrastructure or a phased deconstruction of key plant and structures with a view on future demolition.

Our reputation for excellence is centred on collaborative working and delivering the right engineering solutions to our clients’ problems and you will be expected to help define the problem, identify an appropriate demolition methodology, and justify the right solution.

The relationship with our clients is of critical importance and we expect you to build close ties with the client, founded on trust, nurturing collaborative delivery and a desire to continually improve the engineering service we provide. The role may also include supporting business development and bidding activities.

You’ll will be required to help grow our technical capability through the development of yourself, mentoring or managing others and striving for the continued improvements in reputation for excellence.

Whilst your office base will be in Bristol, flexibility in work location is important – from time to time our clients do call on our team to deliver work from their sites.

The Person:

We are looking for people who relish in technically challenging engineering projects. You should have the ability to solve complex problems and be able to clearly communicate this solution to others. A strong civil/structural engineering background with decommissioning or demolition experience is essential for our needs.

You will be proactive and have excellent communication and presentation skills. You will also have an appreciation of the commercial aspects of consultancy and design projects, to identify project risks and to ensure mitigations are identified and in place. You get satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues.

Staff development and career progression is crucial to our business and we are therefore seeking highly motivated people that can help others to develop and achieve their potential. Also needs to demonstrate Civil and Demolition design experience in a lead technical role for large scale/hazardous environments with Regulatory interest and with significant temporary works activities

Skills and behaviors:

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Performance driven and able to motivate self and teams and create a strong delivery culture.

  • A strong element of client relationship management and people leadership.

  • Willing to work flexibly with occasional out of hours work to accommodate project & client requirements.

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience:

  • Good demolition experience.

  • Develop demolition strategies for nuclear facilities, or similar high hazard industry.

  • Technical practitioner able to demonstrate sound engineering judgement and with extensive experience in using fundamental engineering skills. 

  • Able to produce and review/correct high-quality technical reports.

  • Awareness of own technical limitations and using the help and support of others to deliver.

  • An understanding of the commercial aspects of a consultancy business.

  • Some on-site or hands-on plant experience is desirable but not essential.

  • We envisage that you will have the following qualifications (or equivalents):

  • Honours Degree (or equivalent) in civil/structural engineering or related discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership status.

In summary:

  • 3+ years’ experience in an NEC commercial environment.

  • Evidence of working under CDM.

  • Experience in a complex regulatory and procedural environment.

  • Previous Radiological Deplant & Demolition experience.

  • Large project team experience > £3-5 Mill.

  • Chartered or working towards chartered status.

  • Complex Optioneering Experience.

  • 5+ years Site experience in lead/senior Engineer role.

  • Evidence of Involvement in planning and delivery of complex projects.

  • Significant Stakeholder Management experience, Client, Regulatory and Supply Chain.

  • Significant understanding of the application of Asbestos Regulations

  • Significant understanding of Waste Regulations.

  • Demonstrate success with innovation.

  • Collaborative and influencing nature, excellent soft skill set with high standards.
