Our team in the Nuclear & Power business, specialises in taking on the most challenging engineering projects and opportunities, from technical leadership to project management. With existing relationships with the major operators in the power sector, we offer variety of work, within a team which is rapidly developing to meet the challenge of the developing UK power market.

Based in Birmingham, you’ll be part of small, growing multidisciplinary team with key expertise in the electrical transmission and distribution sector, but with ambition and in an excellent location to provide project delivery capability into the other parts of the power industry. A significant proportion of our workload is front end engineering design which requires the development of innovative solutions to engineering problems.  We also work closely with other parts of the Atkins organisation who provide specialist support to projects.

As mentioned, we also work to support wider energy projects, including renewables, and in the transportation and infrastructure sector.

The Role:

You’ll be working within our Energy systems networks team within our Nuclear & Power business, where our team focusses both on global electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.

You will join a team of civil and electrical engineering professionals with staff of graduate through to chief engineer level, helping to develop technical solutions across a wide range of challenging projects.  You will be expected to:

  • Lead Structural/ Civil Engineer on new Substation works – This includes structures/ Foundations/ Oil Containment bunds/Fencing/ Roads/ Drainage/ GIS Buildings etc.
  • Support of the Design Assurance Engineer in assurance to design packs.
  • Support of Authorised Engineer in developing civil designs at FEED stage – this will be predominantly civil biased.
  • Contribute to FEED works for cable Routing and Optioneering – writing of reports for feasibility of cable works predominantly civil biased.
  • Design lead leading our design capability in Bangalore.
  • You’ll be flexible; you could be working on a small individual assignment or as part of a larger, multi-disciplinary team, taking on some of the most complex and challenging projects in the world.

  • You will enjoy using a variety of approaches to find the best possible outcome, debating the issues, and challenging the norms.  As soon as you’re presented with a problem, you are focused on how to resolve it, whatever it might be. 
  • You don’t just tackle these things alone; you like to work with others, ask questions, build relationships with your colleagues and importantly, engage with clients to listen, explain, and advise.  You enjoy breaking down and understanding complex ideas and applying your knowledge to solve real world problems.
  • We’d like you to be flexible and willing to travel as work requires; we are often based at our client’s sites or working collaboratively with them in their offices.
  • Overall, you get satisfaction from building relationships with others.  You enjoy getting to know people and working to have a positive impact– whether delivering directly or supporting others in their endeavours.
  • From a technical perspective, you have a structural design bias but with a good general civil experience.

In addition to excellent communication and problem-solving skills, you will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Degree qualified Civil or Structural Engineer.
  • Some experience of working in a professional services environment.
  • Some experience of working in the electricity supply industry.
  • Working towards or having become professionally qualified with either the ICE or the IStructE.
  • A good understanding of practical steel and reinforced concrete design.
  • A good understanding of structural engineering principles and structural behaviour.
  • Experience with engineering software packages.
  • An understanding of general civil engineering design such as highways and drainage.
  • The ability to develop innovative solutions to engineering problems working with engineers from other disciplines.
