As a Senior engineer in our Energy Systems business, you will support the implementation of our strategy for Net Zero and decentralized energy as well as the development of opportunities and delivery of projects.

You will understand the emerging net zero sector, technologies, funding, client drivers. You will have track record of project delivery in the energy sector.

About the Project / Team:

Our Energy business has been operating for over four decades and the pace of change has never been greater than it is now.  These are critical times in how the world generates and uses Energy.  There is a critical need to reduce carbon emissions to avoid damaging climate change and push towards a Net Zero energy future.  However, this needs to be balanced against the requirement to provide electricity and heat at affordable cost.  Further pressure is created by the increasing demand from developing nations and our responsibility as a society to provide access to electricity to as many of the world’s population as possible.

Our aim is to become a market leader in delivering a net zero energy system through a reputation for innovation, quality of delivery and excellence, across a range of services including technical advisory, project development and design and engineering. The range of technologies could include district heating / cooling, renewables, hydrogen, direct air capture and CCS.

You’ll be working as part of the Energy Systems team, playing an important role in winning and delivering projects.

Our dynamic and innovative team of engineers and consultants work on projects of all shapes and sizes. At a strategic level, we work with national Government and industry bodies to help shape policy around energy systems. Other strategic initiatives include helping key clients devise their net zero strategy by assessing the range of technologies and opportunities available to integrate or co-locate with existing assets and infrastructure.

We also help our Clients to deliver and implement real projects, ranging from feasibility studies, through to design, construction and Client Engineer roles. Our team has a strong track record of delivering operational projects and helping Client’s realize their aims of energy reduction, decarbonization and air quality improvement.

As the low carbon industry develops, we are also working with organizations such as lenders and private sector businesses in the sale and purchase of assets. This includes technical due diligence roles on projects across the UK and mainland Europe, such as major district heating companies and renewable energy installations

What you’ll be doing:

We are looking for an experienced engineer to join our team.  The role will be focused on net zero and decentralized energy projects with a particular remit to support the front end of project development including feasibility, techno-economic assessment, concept development etc.

Your responsibilities will include contributing to the life cycle of consultancy, including bidding and project execution.

Variety is key to this role. One day you might be solving a complex engineering challenge, the next you will be meeting with Clients, or writing a high-quality bid to help us land the next big project. You will be engaging with and advising key clients in energy sector, contributing to the client’s success and developing sustainable, long term relationships. You will be expected to maintain a high level of expertise in this sector for Atkins, delivering this expertise into bids and projects.

You’ll need to have:

You’ll have excellent communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills. You’ll be able to manage client relationships, engage constructively with multiple stakeholders and lead delivery of strategic work initiatives.  Through your work you will also help support and shape the development of our future business.

You will have:

Chartered Process, Mechanical, Electrical Engineer or Building Services Engineer (CEng)

Ability to lead and undertake engineering design, review and technical advisory, across a range of decentralized energy and low carbon technologies

Demonstrable experience in the low carbon sector with a good knowledge of key technologies e.g. renewables, biomass, heat pumps, storage, hydrogen, decentralized energy including district heating and/or cooling projects

Ability to run and manage projects, including financial performance

Strong Quality, Safety, Security, Environment (QSSE) focus, with demonstrable track record of implementing these standards

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Entrepreneurial attitude and willingness to challenge normal practice

Capable and confident of leading, building and maintaining strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Positive outlook and approachable manner

Drive and ambition to help us create a market leading business in this sector

Desirable:

Knowledge of electric vehicle infrastructure and smart networks

Some experience of costing and economic modelling of projects

Experience of project delivery, including design and site phase implementation (e.g. witnessing of commissioning)
