We are seeking an experienced Senior Heritage Consultant to join our team in Bristol to help deliver our increasing portfolio of projects across the southwest region, and beyond.  You will be joining a close-knit team of specialists based across the UK, with expertise in archaeology, historic buildings  historic landscapes and heritage management.

Our team provide expert advice and planning services on projects around the world, working on behalf of a wide range of clients, from national governments, statutory agencies and local authorities, to charitable trusts, private developers and individuals. We collaborate closely with our colleagues in a wide range of design and environmental disciplines to provide a comprehensive range of services.  We have an excellent reputation for innovation and imaginative engagement, particularly on large infrastructure programmes.

Applicants with a strong background in archaeology, the historic built environment and historic landscape, with experience in consultancy, who have a good understanding of the UK planning system would be welcomed. Job responsibilities:

  • Providing expert advice to a range of clients and internal teams on a diverse range of projects;
  • Preparing and contributing to environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, impact assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications;
  • Management of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and on budget;
  • Management of archaeological fieldwork programmes and archaeological subcontractors;
  • Defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage provision
  • Contribution of key technical expertise and knowledge to project teams; and
  • Sourcing new opportunities and providing technical contribution to tenders. 

Experience and skills requirements

Qualifications

Relevant Masters level, or higher qualification in archaeology or heritage conservation or heritage management or considerable experience akin to this level of qualification.

Essential

  • Strong background in archaeology and the historic environment, reporting, and project management;
  • Good working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance;
  • Experience of delivering environmental impact assessments and supporting programmes for large scale multi-discipline infrastructure projects;
  • Willingness to work across the UK in client and Atkins’ offices as fits project requirements;
  • Full, clean, UK driving licence; and
  • Health and Safety awareness and experience of H&S on projects.

Desired

  • Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists or Institute for Historic Buildings Conservation;
  • CSCS accreditation
  • Experience in a commercial consultancy environment;
  • Technical or specialist subject expert;
  • Commercial skills and experience;
  • Good working knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office packages and GIS

  • Strong technical knowledge and skills;
  • Excellent report writing skills;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines;
  • Innovation in approach to archaeological and heritage matters;
  • Willingness to learn and to mentor others.
