About the team

In 2017, the UAE published its National Climate Change Plan for 2050 serving as a roadmap to bolster nationwide actions for climate mitigation and in 2021 became the first Gulf petro-state to commit to fully decarbonise its economy and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 with an investment of $6bn a year and a requirement to reduce emissions by 23% by 2030 and 50% of electricity from renewables by 2050. Other MENA states such as Saudi Arabia have launched major net zero initiatives.

These ambitious targets show the regional commitment to net zero. A net zero energy system will require the implementation of renewable, hydrogen production, electric vehicles and storage infrastructure at scale. The combination of renewable sources and increase in demand however requires a stable backbone primarily based on gas/CCGT plants acting as frequency response, reserve or baseload to maintain security of supply and facilitate further renewable energy integration. This may be achieved by new units, life extension, repurposing, fuel conversion or simply reducing utilisation.

As one of the world’s leading engineering and design consultancies, we believe Atkins has a compelling and substantial role in advising, challenging, developing and implementing power plant projects.

Atkins has a well-established and reputable energy team, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, but serving the region. Our team has a real family feel, and are considered to be one of the most diverse teams within the wider Atkins/SNC-Lavalin group.

The role is based either in Abu Dhabi or within our Global Technology Centre (GTC) in India (Bangalore/Gurgaon/Mumbai) supporting the Net Zero business in Abu Dhabi.  The team’s broader remit extends to the integration of all types of energy, its production, transportation and consumption.  As such there will be a requirement to collaborate and work closely with colleagues with backgrounds in all of the main power generation technologies as well as transmission and distribution, carbon capture and storage and green hydrogen production.
