Job Title: Project Manager

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager to join our Nuclear and Power team in Derby or Sheffield.

Building strong and trusted relationships is a key part of this role. You’ll enjoy working with others, sometimes at client sites, sometimes from our offices, and thrive on working within a collaborative and diverse project delivery environment.

About the Team

The Derby and Sheffield team’s work supports a number of key nuclear programmes including the UK Submarine programme, the existing nuclear generation fleet, decommissioning and high integrity structures for new nuclear establishments. The team are also increasing support to a range of exciting Civil Nuclear new build projects such as the UK SMR programme of which Atkins are a major part of the consortium.

We also deliver work to the wider Energy industry, making use of our strong design and analytical skills to deliver projects for other internal or external clients.

What you’ll be doing

You will lead the delivery of projects and technical works, managing Atkins project teams or working for our clients embedded into their major programmes. Through your role as a project manager you will have the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary technical teams engaged in a range of consulting activities.

You will have accountability for the complete project life cycle; from developing project proposals through project execution and project completion, to the subsequent identification and growth of future business opportunities.

You’ll work closely with our clients, consulting with them to develop a full understanding of their project requirements and maintain communication to ensure delivery against expectations.

You must be able to appreciate complex practical, technical and commercial issues and to work constructively with a broad range of stakeholders, leading project teams that are local to you or distributed across different locations.

As a Senior Project Manager you will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with our clients to capture project requirements.
  • Working with Atkins teams to develop plans, bids and solutions to meet those needs.
  • Proactively managing all aspects of projects delivery, including forecasting, control, change management, risk management and reporting on project progress.
  • Instilling client confidence in Atkins’ project delivery through your professionalism and care.

Other key aspects of the role include working to secure and develop the resources required to deliver tasks and initiating and managing projects in line with Atkins’ internal Business Management System processes. You will support the development, implementation and sharing of best practice for project management. You will also support our operational management through project financial planning & reporting, resourcing and management of cash flow within projects.

You’ll need to have

 You will have excellent communication, listening, stakeholder management and influencing skills. You will also be able to manage client relationships, engage constructively with multiple stakeholders and lead delivery teams. You’re confident, having dealt with complex client interactions, and motivated, with a desire to be challenged and to contribute to the success of the business.  You have a responsible attitude towards safety and security.

You’ll have experience of applying a range of project management principles and skills to deliver successful project outcomes and direct accountability for quality, time, cost and technical performance of projects.

Our work is diverse and therefore you will be flexible, adaptable and have a keen interest in working with a multi-disciplinary engineering team.

The following additional requirements are desirable:

  • Chartered, or in the advanced stages of working towards this.
  • An engineering background.
  • Degree qualified or equivalent
  • Hold a professional project or programme management related qualification.
  • Nuclear sector experience including mechanical design and analysis.
  • Delivery of complex technical consultancy projects and services.

Although the team is based in Derby and Sheffield, the wider Nuclear and Power business has opportunities at locations around the country, internationally and at various client sites. Flexibility on work location and a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites is beneficial.
