‘Creative Design’ is not your typical in-house team. We are a proactive and creative team of over 60 designers, developers, visualisers, filmmakers and immersive media specialists based across 8 offices, 7 in the UK and one in India. We deliver world class solutions to a wide range of Atkins clients including MoD, EDF, Highways England, Transport for London, HS2 and the Environment Agency. We work collaboratively with Atkins’ teams and external clients, getting to the heart of problems and adding value and innovation to every project.

We create bespoke communications which focus on bringing meaning to content, make information more accessible and add value to projects. About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior user experience designer to work closely with our UX/UI team within Creative Design. We’re looking for someone with strong user centred design skills, who communicates clearly and persuasively to clients and thrives working within a team. The person for this role would be willing to expand upon their already exceptional skills and learn from other designers and technical disciplines in a fast-paced, progressive environment. You will be working cohesively with the web development team, UI designers and creative designers to deliver world class engaging websites and web applications that focus on the user’s needs and the business goals of the client.

This role offers great scope to grow your experience areas, whether you’re developing wireframes and prototypes for MVPs, or consulting on user flows and interaction patterns for existing platforms. You will need to be comfortable adapting to different projects across a range of markets and thrive in the ambiguity of a challenge. There’s a huge opportunity to bring greater value to our variety of engineering, infrastructure and architectural design projects. You will bring your ideas, passion and problem-solving approaches to help us deliver fresh, digital solutions. You’ll be a team player, ensuring that delivery is of the highest standard, both visually and technically. You’ll support with the planning of projects, understanding and estimating resource requirements, managing the team and building a pipeline of work whilst embracing the variety and enjoying the buzz of a dynamic working environment. The team are currently working remotely due to COVID-19.

Senior User Experience Designer Responsibilities

  • At times you may be responsible for designing, amending and implementing small and large scale digital initiatives for mobile and desktop driven by user needs
  • Use a high degree of technical judgement to resolve design challenges
  • Creating and leading UX strategy for transformation and other projects
  • Support the UX/UI team on large scale projects
  • Conduct user research dependent on the project (workshops, user interviews, surveys, etc)
  • Facilitate and lead workshops this may be with focus groups including multiple stakeholders or users. Currently we use Miro as a tool for this.
  • Use prototype tools to create low to mid-fidelity wireframes for rapid user testing
  • Run user testing sessions
  • Utilise your understanding of information architecture to apply designs to different development frameworks
  • Collaborate with team members and clients to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals and experience
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps
  • Raise awareness of the importance of user experience to clients
  • Collaborate with project managers and developers through the project lifecycle to ensure high quality delivery
  • Continuously enhance knowledge and keep up with emerging trends in design
  • Mentoring junior designers through project work and review sessions

  • Comfortable stretching your knowledge to work in VR, AR and XR
  • Confident in getting stakeholder engagement
  • Understanding of designing thinking and human centred design principles
  • Collaborating with Designers and Developers to create intuitive, user-friendly software
  • Confident in conducting usability testing and creating reports
  • Able to communicate design ideas and prototypes to developers
  • Familiarity with interaction design and information architecture
  • Excellent verbal communication skills

Desirable experience

  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS; JavaScript is a plus
  • Good working knowledge of Scrum and Agile development methodologies
  • Have experience in producing digital solutions for multiple clients or markets
  • Have gained in depth experience within an agency environment or well-known product
