The transportation infrastructure sector is experiencing unprecedented levels of investment and Atkins is playing a leading role in projects to upgrade existing transport networks to deliver future demand including major new road schemes, high-speed rail as well as extensive public transport, walking and cycling enhancements. Consultants from Atkins and their partners in the supply chain, are working with central government, local authorities, contractors and private developers to develop our future cities and infrastructure.

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline of work and we are currently recruiting talented individuals to help deliver transport planning projects for our expanding client base.  With over 300 specialists in our Transport Planning business we have the flexibility and resources to provide our clients with an extensive range of services including transport policy and strategy planning, traffic modelling, scheme appraisal, travel demand management, scheme design and development planning.

Key clients include South Wales Trunk Road Agent Framework (SWTRA), South West and Mid Wales Regional Engineering Consultancy Framework  (SWMWREC), Cardiff Council, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire County Councils, West of England Combined Authority Framework (WECA), Gloucestershire County Council, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, Portsmouth City Council, LB Harrow, Sefton Borough Council and Royal Borough of Kingston.

Some of our key projects include: WelTAG assessments for SWTRA and Welsh local authorities; Transport Assessments for a variety of land uses- schools, housing and employment, including associated access designs for local authorities; Transport Hubs within the Bath City region; access design for Gwent Police Headquarters in Cwmbran; M5 Junction 9 /A46 Mitigation Package to support Tewksbury Garden Town Initiative; the delivery of the Mini Holland Go Cycle programme in RB Kingston; supporting Hampshire CC and Portsmouth CC with their delivery of the Transforming Cities Funding allocation and supporting TfGM, Sefton BC and Surrey CC with their various cycling programmes in response to Covid19 and Active Travel plans.

The Role

We are currently recruiting an ambitious Design Engineer for our Transport Planning business and would like to discuss this exciting opportunity with prospective candidates.  We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who can contribute to shaping and growing a high performing, dynamic team, working seamlessly across our national business. The successful candidate will have demonstrable design experience supported by AutoCAD in the Traffic Engineering/ Street Design/ Public Realm field.  Making the most of your transport planning and development skills, you’ll create streetscapes, secure developers planning approval and deliver sustainable accessible developments.

The role will involve proactively supporting in the delivery of traffic engineering and public realm projects including investigations and scheme design, the preparation of drawings, scheme costs and reports. This exciting opportunity will provide a platform for career development and experience of working on a range of high-profile projects across the UK.

The Candidate

Successful applicants will be flexible, self-motivated and will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Sound technical competence;
  • Ability to work under pressure and proven success in meeting deadlines;
  • Confident team worker with ablity to work independently; and
  • Experience of working to time and budget constraints.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate technical skills and competencies such as:

  • Demonstrable project and people management skills;
  • Experience in development and implementation of urban highway, transport and public realm schemes; and
  • Delivery of work in line with DMRB, Manual for Streets guidance and LTN 1/20 Active Travel Act.

Successful candidates will have:

  • A relevant transport planning, engineering degree/technical qualification or similar;
  • Working knowledge of CDM and relevant Health and Safety regulations; and
  • Ideally, membership of a relevant professional institute.

It is desirable that candidates will be able to demonstrate technical skills and competencies commensurate with their level of experience such as:

  • Experience of 3D design using AutoCAD 3D;
  • Appropriate previous experience of development and implementation of urban highway, transport or public realm schemes, including cycling and pedestrian schemes, bus priority schemes or high street improvements and signalised junctions; and
  • Experience with Projectwise.
