Atkins Building Design practice are committed to delivering project solutions in any sphere of the built environment that demonstrably improve the quality of life for those people who live, work and play within them.  We do this using positive and pioneering technology and exploiting applied research and innovation, with data being the backbone to everything we develop. 

In support of this we have a dedicated multi-disciplinary research & innovation team, introducing a range of complementary skills to the more traditional design and engineering professionals.  We are currently looking for an experienced urban data scientist to join our team in an established role, working in the area of urban data and applied research.  The ideal candidate for this role would be someone who has 2-5 years’ experience working in the built environment sector and is passionate about creating better places for people through research and data driven approaches.   

Responsibilities:

  • Work within the dedicated multi-disciplinary research & innovation team to develop applied research and applicable solutions to design challenges across a range of sectors.
  • Leading urban analytics and research projects that support our core themes, for example: social sustainability, smart cities, human-centred design, or net zero urban environments.
  • Supporting data driven propositions that sit within the research & innovation strategy to support both client and design team drivers.
  • Working with colleagues to identify new opportunities to utilise data science in applied research and design projects
  • Explore opportunities to apply research evidence and innovative technology solutions within the context of our design process and methodology.

Skills & Experience:

  • A master degree level qualification that utilises data in the field of Urban Studies, Computation Design, Geography, Transport, or similar and 2 - 5 years' experience in practice dependant on degree.
  • Knowledge and experience using existing data sources and spatial analysis methods that could be used to better understand the built environment, and a desire to pass this knowledge onto the wider team.
  • Knowledge and experience of different research methods to understand the built environment and urban challenges.
  • The ability to coherently present findings both verbally and visually to a wide range of professionals, clients and consultants with varying degrees of data literacy.
  • Experience in manipulation and analysis of both real-time and static data sets, with a focus on geospatial and urban data analysis, using standard GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) or web-based mapping platforms (mapbox, kepler).
  • Experience in applying data science and analysis in an applied research environment to meet commercial objectives.
  • Programming experience in languages such as; Python, SQL, R, VBA, apache spark, big query, Node.JS, or similar for the purpose of research, urban analytics and tool development.
  • Experience of setting up dashboards to allow the data to be interrogated by the end-user using software such as Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik, or built using a programming language (shiny, ploty, dash, JavaScript frameworks).

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to get buy-in from a range of stakeholders to prioritise deliverables.
  • Demonstrable passion for testing and experimenting with new technologies and methodologies and encouraging immediate team to do so too.
