We are looking for Assistant Highways Engineers to join our design teams in Essex (Chelmsford or Cambridge) to work on a wide range of projects.

About the role:

As an Assistant Highway Engineer, you will have technical competence in highway engineering design. You will ensure the technical quality of your work, working collaboratively with others. We are seeking candidates with experience in the design of new highways as well as those who are experienced in the design of maintenance schemes on the trunk road and motorway network.

What you will be doing?

Assisting with the design of a wide variety of highway projects at all stages of the project lifecycle from concept to in-use maintenance on the local and strategic highway network. Specifically, you will be:

  • Designing elements of highway infrastructure projects using the DMRB and other standards with a knowledge of highway engineering and the process and techniques involved.
  • Supporting Engineers in the design of elements of the project from project initiation through to completion.
  • Ensuring robust technical solutions.
  • Undertaking self-checking and assisting with checking the work of technicians and apprentices.
  • Supporting other team members and assisting with the technical development of technicians
  • Solving engineering problems.
  • Helping to develop construction cost estimates.
  • Liaising with others.
  • Using proprietary software for highways design, drainage and other elements as appropriate to deliver the technical aspects of designs.

You’ll need to have:

  • A Foundation Degree or HND/HNC (engtech would be an advantage).
  • Experience of designing elements of highway engineering solutions in accordance with the DMRB that are ready for construction.
  • Experience in highway engineering design for significant maintenance projects or new infrastructure projects.
  • The ability to work within a BIM2 environment using proprietary industry standard engineering design software including Civils 3D.
  • Ability to interface with Engineers, specialists and senior staff and supporting other team members on technical matters.
  • Willingness to help develop less experienced team members including monitoring their work.
  • Good interpersonal skills working collaboratively with others.
  • Good technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage own work and advise technicians to support them in delivering their work.
  • Ability to focus and deliver whilst working within programme and budget constraints.
  • A desire to help others develop.
  • A full UK driving license is essential.

We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic individual with good existing client relationships. An eye for detail and confidence to challenge decisions and concepts in a constructive way are key attributes for this role. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with clients and stakeholders at all levels.

Additional Information:

The actual full-time working hours are to be agreed with the line manager in due course. Some flexibility may be required by the successful candidate in order to meet project and client needs. A part-time role may be considered.
