Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Denver, CO Team as an Assistance Traffic Specialist- Traffic Operations Center.

MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Under limited supervision, works to effectively manage traffic in order to maximize traffic operations on the roadway system. knowledgeable in traffic operations and intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and has a basic familiarity with other transportation-related components, such as construction, design, traffic signals, traffic flow patterns, etc.

Monitors traffic conditions and anticipates problem areas. As needed, can fill in for operator and perform basic Public Information duties. Self-driven, creative, interpersonal, calm in highly stressful situations, and can explain and listen to differing perspectives.

JOB DUTIES
  • Validate all incidents entered in the incident management system.
  • Monitor roadways on the interstate using ITS devices for incident management.
  • Place suitably phrased messages on changeable message signs (CMS).
  • Manage and predict lengths of disruption.
  • Undertakes periodic training and re-training, and passes performance evaluation testing developed and administered by the consultant with the approval and oversight of relevant state DOT as required.
  • For major events and weather events, prepare appropriate messages to be placed on CMS, and during events take necessary actions to avoid serious congestion by updating CMS messages to provide advice or alternate routes and expected delay times as appropriate. As well as, provide advance planning for major events and construction projects, and make sure the public is aware of future traffic conditions with the assistance of the Media Liaison.
  • Works closely with existing Operator staff and performs Operator duties as needed (e.g., answering 511 calls, incident management and coordination with other agencies).
  • Where possible construction projects are planned, prepare necessary CMS messages, and in the event of possible serious congestion, update CMS messages to provide advice on alternate routes and expected delay times as appropriate
  • Actively reviews or implements traffic management through the use of tools such as ATMS, ATIS, DMS/CMS, Ramp Metering, 511 floodgates, and develops alternate route provisions when an incident or heavy congestion is detected and verified.
  • Implements travel time postings on DMS/CMS during peak traffic hours as needed.
  • Provide daily ramp meter interaction, such as troubleshooting, timing, and assisting maintenance contractors, as needed.
  • Receives and responds to emails or re-directs to appropriate staff as necessary.
  • Monitors feedback messages from 511 system users and provides customer service by returning calls from those leaving feedback messages.
  • Researches, identifies and reviews planned construction, maintenance, and special events and activities as required.
  • Assists with data collection to include in monthly reports, travel speed and travel time reports, incident reports and any other reports that are requested.
  • May perform such other assignments as the Supervisor may deem necessary from time to time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate degree; two years’ administrative or technical work experience required. One-year experience as supervisor.
  • Without a degree, a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in dispatch center or 911 operations. Experience in information and communication technologies and/or ITS, such as fiber-optic communication design, video systems engineering, traveler information, electronic payment, computer hardware and software, or traffic control systems is a plus.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills required. Must have good command of the English language. Ability to complete written records in clear well written English. Ability to perform in a professional courteous manner and remain friendly while under pressure. Must have an aptitude for geography and maps.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • TOC Basic Certification Required.
