The Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technology (IMST) practice, within the UK Transportation business, is the home of our market leading transport technology and mobility capability.  We work across the transport sector helping our clients navigate through a rapidly changing world linking current Intelligent Transport Systems with future-focused technology opportunities. The practice provides consultancy advisory, research, technical and design services to a broad set of UK and international clients in the transport sector, including the Department for Transport, Highways England, Network Rail and UK local authorities.  We blend market-leading capability in motorway control systems, toll road systems, urban traffic control and operations and smart ticketing with thinking and advice on emerging trends and growing areas such as digital highways, mobility as a service and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).

Atkins are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and conscientious engineer into our Transportation Systems Practice (Rail Signalling) to be a Signalling Project Engineer.

Atkins has one of the UK Rail industry’s largest signalling engineering teams and as such you will be joining our Transportation Systems Practice which comprises a team of approximately 200 professional signalling and telecommunications design personnel, project engineers and engineering managers.  This, together with Atkins broader cross discipline capability and our Global Design Centre, means our engineers have an unrivalled collective knowledge to tap into and learn from.

The Role

This role is that of an Assistant Signalling Project Engineer / Signalling Project Engineer reporting to an Engineering Manager.

Primary functions of the role include:

  • Supporting the engineering lead for projects and leading the engineering for small packages of work
  • Preparing for and supporting / running inter disciplinary design reviews
  • Preparing Engineering Management Plans, contributing to risk assessments and writing technical reports
  • Producing / managing materials lists
  • Liaising with client engineers
  • Resolving engineering issues both on site and with design teams
  • Assisting in the preparation of estimates and tender documentation
  • Creating and managing of trackers / registers for engineering deliverables
  • Production /collation of O&M manuals and H&S Files
  • Supporting design, test, construction, project management as required, including opportunities to go trackside undertaking Assistant Testing duties during commissioning periods.

    What you can bring

    Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • 2-5 years experience of signalling design, constriction, testing or maintenance
  • HNC / HND / Degree or other technical qualification, preferable electrical or electronic

    Desirable Experience:

  • Holds an IRSE Licence(s)
  • Experience of working on site
  • Knowledge of level crossings
  • Undertaken a railway signalling training scheme (e.g. Apprenticeship / graduate programme)

    Essential Person Qualities

  • Willing and able to learn
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Can do attitude and flexible
  • Able to work within a team, but also be self-motivating
  • Fit and able to work trackside / hold PTS
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and prioritise duties

    Location

  • With project engineering teams based in Glasgow, York, Birmingham, Croydon, Stratford / Lowestoft we offer flexibility in location.
  • The role will be office based, but the candidate will be required to work at other project sites / offices.
