Job Title: Waste and Decommissioning Consultant

The opportunity:

In the Energy sector, Atkins has an exceptional reputation for delivering innovative and cost-efficient solutions to some of the world's most technically challenging problems.

We support the whole life cycle of the nuclear industry, building the next generation of nuclear power stations, keeping the current fleet operational and solving the decommissioning challenge.

Across the UK and around the globe, creating a sustainable energy supply is one of the most crucial and imminent challenges facing us all.  This is a great opportunity to make a positive difference to people's lives and the environment, and you could be that difference.

Only brilliant minds can solve the world's energy challenges. At Atkins you'll find the best place to apply yours.

It is an exciting time at Atkins, and as a result, we have career opportunities for Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management Consultants to join our growing team of nuclear consultants at our prestigious offices based in North Bristol, Warrington, Glasgow or in the Epsom offices. We will support you to develop your current level of technical and project skills through targeted training and continual professional development.

About you:

You will ideally have knowledge and experience of nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management practices; however, experience will be considered from other highly regulated industries. Atkins has a diverse portfolio of clients across the UK and overseas (such as Sweden, UAE and Canada) and you will therefore have the opportunity for a variety of exciting work and experiences.

You will provide specialist advice during the design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and be responsible for the production of the environmental and waste management documentation required under Site License Conditions and the Environmental Permit.
Requirements:
You will be degree qualified in a science (physics or chemistry) or engineering (mechanical or process) subject. At a minimum, you will have knowledge of decommissioning planning and the development of waste management strategies and characterisation. Additionally, it would be of benefit to have experience of optioneering studies, waste packaging and transportation and nuclear reactor chemistry.
You will need to be a good communicator (both verbally and written) as the role involves building key relationships with a variety of stakeholders including clients, operators and designers. You will also have experience completing projects to time, quality and cost. It would be a bonus if you have experience of leadership and people management.
About us:

This is an exciting time for Atkins; we are diversifying our portfolio to become a more global organisation, while also continuing to grow our Energy sector in the UK. There will be opportunities for international travel and applicants with a desire for non-UK based assignments will be welcomed.

Atkins recognise that there are many well qualified people who are looking to further their career in engineering, but who cannot commit to full time employment. We support flexible working arrangements and are interested to discuss how we can accommodate individual requirements.

We are committed to providing equal opportunities and inclusion in the workforce, as we believe that diverse teams provide the best mix of interpersonal and technical skills needed to exceed our customers’ expectations. As an Equal Opportunities Employer, we value applications from all backgrounds, cultures and ability. Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. We encourage participation in all forms of training and have an active programme of in-house, as well as external training, for all of our engineers.

Our commitment to staff development is underpinned by numerous stable and long-term framework agreements with key clients.

By joining the vibrant Nuclear and Power Business in Bristol, Glasgow, Warrington or Epsom, you will also have the opportunity to work across the whole Nuclear market from Decommissioning to Generation to Nuclear New Build.

Why work for Atkins?

The UK is the first major economy to legislate for a Net Zero target by 2050. To achieve this, our Energy Teams are ensuring a mix of secure and sustainable energies that can meet our industry and lifestyle demands today, and in 30 years' time. So, you'll be creating the right safe and resilient systems across nuclear power, renewables, decarbonisation development, new builds and energy efficiency. This includes delivering a sustainable nuclear life cycle from new build, through generation, to decommissioning and waste disposal.
We value your diversity and believe that everyone deserves to thrive – no exceptions. You'll be part of a culture committed to finding new talent from underrepresented groups. We're Disability Confident, an Inclusive Employer, and support STEM Returners. We also want to see more women in senior roles at Atkins. In the energy sector, we've signed up to the AXIS Pledge, promising to make equal pay, equal leadership, and equal opportunities a reality.

Please refer to our Rewards and Benefits page for details on our full benefits package.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.

If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV,  details of any current or previously held security clearance.
