Insights What inspired Cristopher to become a Process Engineer?
Can you tell us a little bit about your professional background?
I have been a professional engineering consultant in the power sector for about 15 years. I joined the AtkinsRéalis Group, including Atkins and Faithful+Gould's business following my graduation from Strathclyde University where I received a Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering. I started off as a Process Engineer in the power business in Glasgow, United Kingdom. I received my Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Chemical Engineers soon after and took on a role at a small renewable energy consultancy. I returned to Atkins after being lured by some recent novel and unique projects. Following a fortunate series of events, I transferred over to the Company’s office in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), fulfilling a long-held aspiration to relocate and work internationally.
What inspired you to become a Chief Engineer?
I initially completed an undergraduate degree in another field after secondary school, which didn’t suit me. At that point, I reassessed my strengths and interests and became attracted to engineering in view of the excellent career prospects it offered and opportunities for international travel. I also had a strong desire to make a significant contribution to society in some way.
What is the coolest thing you are working on?
Right now, the Middle East is experiencing sweeping changes in the power sector with the addition of renewable and nuclear power to replace fossil fuel plants. It has been satisfying to lead our teams as governments, developers and other clients come to us looking for high-value consultancy advice to help them through this period of change.
What do you think has had the biggest impact on your career development to date?
Deciding to transfer to the UAE. I relocated with my family, so I feel there is a lot more pressure to help maintain and grow the business. There have also been more opportunities to develop both personally and professionally. I am fortunate to be part of the region’s Power team, helping to guide the strategic direction for the business and develop new professional relationships.
What is the best advice you were ever given?
To find a way to say “yes” to new opportunities. Whether it’s to a business trip or assignment in another country, trying out a new skill or making new friends, an attitude of saying “yes” leads to adventure and gives life meaning.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”
It’s a concise reminder that it’s not until we put things into action that we obtain long-lasting knowledge, and that spoken words are often forgotten quickly.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I can ride a unicycle and juggle clubs.
