Insights An international career in Nuclear

As part of our #PeopleDriveResults campaign, we caught up with Tamer Ghali, Project Manager in Mississauga (Canada). He gave us some insight into the projects he's working on and why he thinks nuclear energy is the future.

Read on to find out more about small modular reactors, spaceships and nuclear jobs at AtkinsRéalis .

1. Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do

I’m Tamer Ghali and since May 2020 I’ve been the Deputy Project Director for tooling on the Darlington Retube and Feeder Replacement (RFR) Project. Prior to this role, I was the RFR Deputy Project Director, Unit 3, 1 & 4 Engineering and Procurement.

2. What inspired you to take an active interest in energy?

I started my career in energy with Stone and Webster Canada in 1998 and worked mainly on oil and gas projects for Imperial Oil. Then I moved to Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) in 2000 where my career shifted to nuclear energy. I was inspired by the history and development of CANDU technology in Canada, and the delivery of CANDU reactors in Canada, Argentina, Romania, Korea and China.

3. What kind of energy projects have you been involved in professionally?

Since 2000, there have been various nuclear energy projects that I’ve been proud to work on. A few that come to mind include the Darlington Retube and Feeder Replacement (RFR) Project, Canada’s largest clean energy project. The complexity of this project required meticulous detail and planning, and gave us the opportunity to innovate further with methods that increased cost savings and improved the risk profile of the project.

The OPG Candu Services projects have helped the province of Ontario achieve Net Zero. Whilst the Embalse Refurbishment Project in Argentina helped to extend the life of Embalse.

4. What do you think the biggest change to the energy sector will be in our lifetime?

The development and delivery of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The SMRs are the future of nuclear energy, as they can be delivered in a variety of sizes, from tens of megawatts to hundreds of megawatts. The advantage of the SMR is the small space it requires, reduced capital investment, and enhanced safety and security.

Amongst shifting global priorities and growing innovations, a key driver to watch is how clean energy shape engineering in Canada

5. Just for fun… You get to design your own spaceship. What fuel source do you use?

Nuclear Energy, because it's a clean and powerful source of energy, helping tokeep our earth and space clean. It’s one to watch amongst the major trends are fueling Canada's clean energy transition.

6. What has been your favorite travel trip?

I love travelling and my favorite trip was with my family to Italy. We saw Venice, Florence and Rome. I enjoyed the history, art, architecture and food.
