Connecting people

Highways are an essential element in connecting people and places, and in enabling the movement of goods. As the number of journeys made for business and leisure continues to increase and diversify across different modes, here at AtkinsRéalis, we’re helping our clients reimagine, reinvent and re-energise infrastructure to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.

We’ve been delivering major highway projects for public-sector clients across the world for decades, working on a wide range of projects that include the delivery of large highway improvement schemes and smart motorways on the strategic road network in the UK and delivering new tolling systems in America.

More recently we’ve been supporting our UK local authority clients to adapt to the policy changes that put active travel and sustainable transport at the forefront of the movement of people and goods by repurposing existing highway infrastructure to meet various policy objectives around climate change, health and Net Zero.

We help our clients embrace new ideas such as digital engineering, implement inclusive designs for use by all and adopt a safe design approach, as well as embed sustainability into everything we do. We solve some of the most complex engineering problems – applying innovative thinking, pioneering technologies and delivering outstanding projects to create the best outcome for clients and society, every single time.

Wellbeing and work-life balance are core to the way we work, and we’re continuously evolving to build and maintain a community that shares the belief that everyone’s voice is valuable and should be treated equally.

That’s why we are different - and why we are one of the most prominent highway consultants in the world.

The M25 is the orbital motorway surrounding greater London and is one of the busiest sections of the road network in the UK. The motorway is 273 miles long (439 km) and it supports road users in making 75 million journeys a year. Connect Plus Services (CPS) is a Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) contract; AtkinsRéalis business works as part of an unincorporated joint venture with our partners Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operation UK.

As a part of the joint venture, which was established in 2009, AtkinsRéalis provides expert support and skilled staff across a number of engineering and construction disciplines to carry out the asset management, initial design and project scoping, detailed design, technical consultancy and project management for all of the lifecycle asset management and network improvement schemes across the M25 and all adjoining trunk and slip roads.

A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon

Making history as the biggest road projects in the UK, the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme now makes an indispensable route for nearly 85,000 drivers transporting essentials in and around the UK. One of the most challenging projects that has been undertaken by AtkinsRéalis, the A14 made a milestone achievement, by delivering the project eight months earlier than its scheduled time, even in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a major design partner in the joint venture to deliver Highways England’s £1.5 billion upgrade to the A14, our approach to using digital technologies has not only taught us valuable lessons, but it has also moved our industry further along the digital journey.
