We are actively seeking candidates to join our growing Airports team.  We can offer individuals exciting opportunities to lead and support on a wide range of Canadian airport and heliport projects.  We are well established at major airports, including Vancouver and Kelowna and are pursuing international airport projects.

As part of SNC-Lavalin’s Engineering Services group, the Airports team specializes in providing a full range of planning and engineering services for airport and heliport infrastructure projects to local, national and international clients.  Projects range from small assignments, such as runway extension studies and apron expansions, to airport master plans and taxiway and runway infrastructure rehabilitation projects.

The Airport team is looking for a Airside Electrical Specialist to join our growing team.  This position reports to the Airports Director.

This role can be based in either Vancouver, Calgary or Toronto – preference will be given to Calgary-based applicants. The Airport team currently operates a hybrid working model with our teams splitting their working week between working from home and in the office. 

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Acting as Lead Electrical Design and/or a Project Manager in the design, project management and contract administration for airfield infrastructure projects for private airports, regional and international airports by applying engineering principles. Specific tasks include airside and groundside electrical design, floodlighting design, lighting design for new runways, taxiways, aprons, airside service roads, airside commercial developments. Coordinating with other disciplines as required.
  • Have knowledge and experience using FAA, ICAO and Transport Canada standards.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on Canadian and International airport projects across the world.
  • Oversee, lead and develop a scope for the engineering investigations and planning work that assist in preparation of design of the airfield infrastructure.
  • Develop and oversee preparation of the design specifications, cost estimates and tender packages for airfield projects. Conduct QC/QA reviews and stamp/seal engineering documents.
  • Provide engineering services during construction activities by reviewing shop drawings for conformance with specifications; prepares records and progress reports defining construction progress; construction observation and evaluates the results from quality control testing.
  • Assist and oversee the development and preparation of figures, design drawings, specifications, calculations, life cycle cost analysis, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, technical reports, design briefs etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current Transport Canada, ICAO, FAA and related standards and recommended practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of reviewing agencies such as NAV CANADA, Transport Canada, Municipalities, etc.
  • Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory agency specifications.
  • Contribute to the development of specifications and Plan of Construction Operations (PCO’s), Land Use Applications (LUP), and authoring technical reports and other documents.
  • Perform field inspections of construction when required. While the position is primarily desk-based, travel to locations within Canada for varying lengths of time is expected to be required on a regular basis during the summer months.
  • Support project management, proposal writing and business development and client base support.
  • Mentor junior staff.

What will you contribute?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (or eligible for licensing) with a minimum of 10 years related work experience.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs and web-based applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project Schedule), AutoCAD , Civil3D, AviPlan Aircraft Modelling software, FAARFEILD, PAVER software.
  • Strong technical background.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability involving analysis of problems and possible solutions, planning of corrective action, including cost estimates and review of alternates, creative thinking where new design is required.
  • Effective team player with excellent interpersonal skills with team members and clients.
  • Fluency in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to project sites (some remote) for design purposes and resident construction services.
  • Demonstrated experience in civil engineering design, or project engineering /management in the airport / transportation / municipal / land development industry.

Salary will be commensurate with your experience.
