Our growing team is looking for talented Radioactive Waste Consultants with nuclear decommissioning experience, or experience in other highly regulated industries. You’ll enjoy working on technically challenging engineering projects and be able to solve complex problems, clearly communicating solutions to others. The Team:

As part of SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear & Power business, the Reactor Decommissioning team is made up of engineers and scientists who work across numerous engineering and waste management projects. Within the nuclear decommissioning industry, our engineers provide advice and support that is critical to continued safe operation of existing plant and decommissioning of plant that has reached its end of life. SNC-Lavalin also play a key role in the development of decommissioning and waste management solutions for the UK and Europe’s fleet of nuclear reactors that have reached or are coming to the end of their power generating life.  You’ll help to grow our technical capability to address a diverse range of problems in a safety critical environment.

The Role:

It is an exciting time at Atkins, and as a result, we have career opportunities for enthusiastic Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management Consultants to join our growing team of nuclear consultants at our prestigious offices based in North Bristol, Glasgow and Epsom.

You will provide specialist advice during the design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and be responsible for the production of the environmental and waste management documentation required under Site License Conditions and the Environmental Permit.

We will support you to develop your current level of technical and project skills through targeted training and continual professional development.

The Person:

We are diversifying our portfolio to become a more global organisation, while also continuing to grow our services in the Nuclear and Power New Build sector in the UK. As part of a larger SNC-Lavalin global business, there will be opportunities to develop your skills and experience in the UK working across all our clients and also for international travel.

Atkins are particularly keen to speak to candidates with a strong background in radioactive waste management in one or more of the following areas:

Characterisation

Understanding of the material/form

Chemical

Physical

Radiological

Activation and Decay routes.

Development and application of radionuclide fingerprints.

Review and assimilation of numerical data/information including characterisation data and radionuclide inventories.

Recommendation of waste classification and waste disposition routes

Assessment of analytical results.

Production of waste management documentation.

Packaging and Transport

Packaging and Transport Knowledge of International and national safe transport regulatory regime.

Knowledge of different types of radioactive material transport packaging and licensing regime (such as Letter of Compliance).

Awareness of different modes of transport.

Awareness of requirements for international shipment.

DGSA accreditation would also be beneficial.

Sampling

Experience of performing sampling on nuclear licensed sites.

Experience of working for/with laboratories who perform radiological and non-radiological services.

Development of sampling plans (for both radioactive and non-radioactive waste materials)

Statistical analysis

In-situ measurement

Non-destructive / destructive analysis

Supply chain  / laboratory auditing

Strategy

Knowledge of UK and devolved government policies relating to decommissioning and radioactive waste management.

Knowledge and understanding of framework that regulates decommissioning and radioactive waste management.

Knowledge and understanding of relevant factors that influence site end states and decommissioning strategies.

Use of decision analysis tools to aid decision making.

Overview of international experience of decommissioning.

RPA/RWA qualified (or working towards) would also be beneficial.

Waste Process & Design

An understanding of waste routing and acceptance criteria / conditions for acceptance for various waste-type disposal routes (e.g. VLLW, Combustible, Metallic Waste Treatment, LLW, ILW and PCM).

Production of waste process documentation (e.g. waste flow/wiring diagrams, process descriptions, waste sequencing / throughput assessments, packaging studies, buffer storage studies and assaying methodology).

Input to safety considerations and hazard identification/mitigation (safety functional requirements, HAZID, HAZOP etc).

Production of high level waste designs and layouts that can be substantiated via collaboration with multi-discipline engineering teams.

An awareness and understanding of available decommissioning technologies.

General Qualities

Candidates should also possess some of the following qualifications, experience or qualities:

Experience of working within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industries where applicable, with knowledge and hands-on expertise.

Able to complete projects to time, cost and quality.

Able to build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.

Good communication and presentation skills.

Degree qualified in a science or engineering subject (physics, chemistry, mechanical, chemical or process engineering) or equivalent experience.

Beneficial:

Knowledge of international waste management and disposal practices;

Experience, or good understanding of working within a consultancy environment.

Experience of project management.

Experience of leadership or people management.

Experience of business development activities.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate flexibility and be able to work across different projects.
